What is walnut shell powder?
Walnut shell powder is the hard shell of the common walnut, dried, ground and sieved into fine particles that you mix with water or a creamy base and use as a rinse-off scrub. Spierb Walnut Shell Powder has one ingredient, Juglans Regia Shell Powder, with no fillers, fragrance or preservatives. It is sieved to a 40–60 mesh grade: fine granules rather than flour.
What is walnut shell powder used for?
Mainly body scrubs. Massaged lightly over damp skin, it lifts loose, rough surface cells so skin feels smoother, softer and fresher after rinsing, especially on arms, legs, elbows and knees. It can also be used on the face with a much smaller amount in a creamy base. For the full method, see how to use walnut shell powder.
Where does walnut shell powder come from?
It comes from the woody shell left over once walnuts are cracked for their kernels. The tree is Juglans regia, known as the common, English or Persian walnut. Spierb's shell comes from the Himalayan foothills of India.
Walnut shell doesn't have a herbal tradition in the way many plant powders do. Its story is practical. Ground shell has long been used as a soft abrasive for polishing and cleaning, because it is firm enough to lift what is loose on a surface. Cosmetic use takes the same property and uses it gently: a fine grade, a wet base and a short, light massage.
If you've seen walnut kernel, hull or industrial grit
Several different walnut products share similar names, and only one is a cosmetic shell powder. Most confusion online comes from mixing them up.
- The kernel is the nut you eat. Ground walnut or walnut oil comes from the kernel, not the shell.
- The hull is the green outer husk around the shell. "Black walnut hull" usually means the husk of a different species, Juglans nigra, sold as a supplement. It has nothing to do with this product.
- Industrial walnut shell is sold for blasting and tumbling. It can be coarser and dustier, so use a cosmetic grade with a known particle size on skin.
How does walnut shell powder exfoliate?
By gentle friction. When the small shell particles move over damp skin, they loosen surface cells that are already ready to shed, and water carries them away. Nothing dissolves or soaks in.
That makes it a mechanical exfoliant, different from an acid or enzyme product that works through a reaction. It also means you control the strength. Pressure, the amount of powder, how slippery the base is, how long you massage and how often you scrub all change how it feels. The helpful effect and the risk of irritation come from the same friction, which is why every Spierb direction says damp skin, a slippery mix, featherlight pressure and a short massage.
What does walnut shell powder do for skin?
Used gently, it helps rough-feeling skin feel smoother after rinsing and leaves the surface looking fresher and more even in texture.
- Smoother rough areas. Elbows, knees, arms and legs are where most people notice the difference first.
- Fewer visible dry flakes. Lifting loose surface scale reduces that dull, ashy look.
- A fresher-looking finish. A smoother surface reflects light more evenly, and moisturiser spreads more easily afterwards.
- A scrub you mix yourself. Stir it into water, plain yoghurt, a prepared Spierb Aloe Vera Powder paste or your usual gentle cleanser.
- Plant-based texture. Ground shell is biodegradable and free from plastic microbeads.
What will I notice, and what won't it do?
Expect smoother, softer skin straight after rinsing, not squeaky or stinging. The effect is on the surface and lasts until skin sheds again, which is why a weekly scrub is enough.
Because it works on the surface, it won't pull blackheads out of pores, shrink pores, fade dark spots or change the look of skin conditions. Pressing harder doesn't reach any deeper. It only adds irritation. If you've heard walnut scrubs are bad for skin, here's what's actually true.
It's a scrub, not a mask, so it never sits on your skin. It isn't for hair or scalp, and it isn't for eating. If you use mask powders such as Multani Mitti, Orange Peel or Neem, use them on a different day from your scrub.
Is walnut shell powder safe to use?
Patch test 24–48 hours before first use, with the mixture you plan to use, on a small area of intact skin. If you have a walnut or tree-nut allergy, choose a non-walnut exfoliant or get personal allergy advice first.
Used as directed, on damp, intact skin with light pressure, it suits most people who tolerate physical exfoliation. The shell is not the nut, but a trace of walnut protein can't be ruled out, and a patch test can't show whether a serious nut allergy will react.
- For external use only.
- Keep the powder, the scrub and the rinse water away from your eyes. If particles get in, rinse with plenty of clean water and don't rub.
- Don't use it on broken, sunburned, freshly waxed or irritated skin, or over inflamed spots.
- Don't use it on the same day as another scrub, strong exfoliating acids or retinoids.
- Stop and rinse if you feel burning, sharp scratching or increasing pain, or see redness that doesn't settle.
- Pour gently so the dry powder doesn't puff into the air, and don't breathe it in.
- Keep out of reach of children. Store sealed, cool and dry, and use a dry spoon.
The dry powder keeps for 2 years from the date of packaging. Mix each scrub fresh and throw away leftovers.
Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of walnut shell powder for the skin?
It gently lifts loose, rough surface cells, so skin feels smoother and softer and looks fresher after rinsing. The benefits show most on arms, legs, elbows and knees. They're surface effects, so a weekly scrub keeps them going.
What is walnut shell good for?
On skin, it's good for a short, gentle rinse-off scrub, mixed with water or a creamy base. Outside the bathroom, ground walnut shell is used as a soft abrasive for polishing and cleaning. For skin, use a cosmetic grade with a known particle size, never industrial grit.
What can I use ground walnut shells for?
Mix them into a loose paste with water or a creamy base and use them as a short rinse-off scrub on damp skin, mainly on arms, legs, elbows and knees. The amounts for the body and the face are in the Spierb guide to using walnut shell powder.
Is walnut dust toxic?
Walnut dust means different things. Fine cosmetic particles used wet on skin are a very different exposure from dust breathed in during industrial grinding or woodworking. Either way, don't breathe in loose powder: pour it gently and mix it in a ventilated room.
How long does walnut shell powder keep?
The dry powder keeps for 2 years from the date of packaging when sealed and stored cool and dry. A scrub mixed with water, yoghurt, Aloe Vera Powder or cleanser is for that session only.
