What is orange peel powder?

Orange peel powder is dried sweet orange peel, finely ground into a powder that you mix with water and use as a rinse-off face or body mask. Spierb Orange Peel Powder has one ingredient, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Powder, and is triple sifted for a smooth paste. It smells naturally of citrus rind and is a muted yellow-orange to tan colour rather than bright orange.

What is orange peel powder used for?

Mainly fresh-mixed face and body masks. A short mask leaves skin feeling clean and fresh, can make oily or combination skin feel less greasy, and gives a fresher, less dull-looking finish. It's also used now and then as a refresh mask for greasy or limp-feeling roots.

Each use has its own page: how to use orange peel powder on your face, the orange peel hair refresh mask, and how to make orange peel powder at home.

Where does orange peel powder come from?

It comes from the peel of the sweet orange, dried and ground in India. Its botanical name is Citrus aurantium dulcis, the sweet orange, which is also the name on the pack: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Powder.

Dried citrus peel has a long place in household beauty routines, especially South Asian face packs and ubtan, the cleansing paste made at home for weddings, festivals and everyday care. Ubtan has no single recipe. Flours, clays, dairy and botanical powders go in by family habit, and orange peel is valued for its fresh scent and fine texture.

If you've read about bitter orange, orange oil or vitamin C

"Orange" covers very different products, and what's true of one form doesn't carry over to another. Separating them clears up most questions.

Sweet orange, not bitter orange

Spierb uses sweet orange peel. Bitter orange is a different citrus material. The word "aurantium" in the ingredient name is part of a cosmetic naming convention, not a sign that the peel is bitter orange.

Powder, not essential oil or extract

Orange essential oil is a concentrated oil, and orange peel extract is a selected fraction of the peel. The powder is simply the whole dried peel, used a spoonful at a time in a mask you rinse off. Warnings and claims written about the oil, including sun-sensitivity warnings, don't automatically apply to the powder.

Peel, not vitamin C powder

Fresh oranges and their peel naturally contain vitamin C, which is where much of the ingredient's reputation comes from. Drying and storage change that, and Spierb doesn't state a vitamin C level. The powder isn't purified vitamin C or a replacement for a vitamin C serum, and its benefits don't depend on it.

How does an orange peel mask work?

It works on the surface. The wet paste sits on clean skin for a short time, then lifts away with surface oil and loose residue when you rinse. The fine peel particles add a mild texture as you loosen the mask with light fingertips.

It's a mask, not a scrub. Any gentle movement belongs to the rinse, and rubbing harder doesn't make it work better. It isn't a soap or a shampoo either.

What are the benefits of orange peel powder for skin?

Used as a short rinse-off mask, it leaves skin feeling clean and refreshed and looking fresher and less dull.

  • A fresher, brighter-looking finish. Brightening here means less dull-looking, never a change in your natural skin colour.
  • A less greasy feel on oily and combination skin, straight after rinsing.
  • A smoother feel from the fine particles, as long as you rinse gently.
  • A fresh citrus scent that makes the routine pleasant.
  • Easy to adjust. Blend it with Spierb Aloe Vera Powder for a softer mask, Multani Mitti for an occasional more mattifying one, or Neem for a herb-forward mask.

Is orange peel powder good for your face?

Yes, for skin that tolerates it, as a short-contact mask once a week, or up to twice a week for oily and combination skin. Oily, combination and normal skin suit it most. Dry or delicate skin can use it less often, with a softer base such as Aloe Vera Powder, plain yoghurt or milk.

A basic mask is the powder mixed with lukewarm water into a smooth paste, applied thinly and rinsed before it dries hard; the face mask guide has the amounts and timings. Expect clean, fresh-looking skin on the day. It isn't a treatment for spots, dark marks or pigmentation.

Is orange peel powder safe to use?

Patch test 24–48 hours before first use, using the exact mixture you plan to use. If you have a known orange or citrus allergy, don't use it.

As a short rinse-off mask, it suits most skin that isn't broken or irritated. For a patch test, put a little of the mixed paste behind your ear or along your jawline, leave it for the usual time, rinse, and watch for redness, itching, burning, swelling or a rash.

  • For external use only.
  • Avoid the eyes and the area around them, the lips and the inside of the nose.
  • Don't use it on broken, sunburned or irritated skin.
  • Stop if it burns, keeps stinging, or causes swelling, a rash or worsening irritation.
  • Don't add lemon juice, vinegar or essential oils to make it "stronger".
  • Pour gently so you don't breathe in the dry powder.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Store sealed, cool and dry, and use a dry spoon.

Use your normal sun protection. The dry powder keeps for 2 years from the date of packaging. Mix each mask fresh and throw away leftovers.

Frequently asked questions

What does orange peel do for your face?

As a short rinse-off mask, orange peel powder leaves your face feeling clean and fresh and looking less dull. Oily and combination skin often feels less greasy afterwards. It doesn't change your natural skin colour.

Why is orange peel good for skin?

It makes a smooth, fine paste that rinses away with surface oil and residue, leaving skin fresh, with a pleasant citrus scent. It also mixes easily with water, yoghurt, milk and other powders, which is why dried peel has a long place in household face packs.

What vitamins are in orange peels?

Fresh orange peel naturally contains vitamin C and other plant compounds, but drying and storage change the amounts. Spierb doesn't state a vitamin C level for the powder, and it isn't a vitamin C treatment.

Is orange peel powder good for hair?

For one narrow job, yes: an occasional rinse-off refresh mask for greasy or limp-feeling roots and scalp, used up to once a week. The method is in the Spierb guide to orange peel powder for hair. It doesn't affect hair growth.

Does orange peel powder really work?

Yes, for what it's meant to do. A short mask leaves skin clean, fresh and less dull-looking. It isn't an acne, pigmentation or vitamin C treatment, and results vary from person to person.
