How to Use Walnut Shell Powder: Body Scrub, DIY Face Scrub and How Often

How to use walnut shell powder as a body scrub or a careful DIY face scrub: how much to use, what to mix it with, how long to massage, what to do afterwards and how often.

The short answer: for your body, mix 1–2 tablespoons of walnut shell powder with water into a loose paste and massage damp skin with light circles for 20–30 seconds per area, then rinse and moisturise. For your face, stir ¼ teaspoon into 2 teaspoons of a creamy base and massage for 20–30 seconds, never more than a minute. Use it once a week.

A body session takes about 3–5 minutes of scrubbing. It comes down to damp skin, a slippery mix and featherlight pressure.

Is a walnut scrub right for your skin?

It suits intact skin that feels rough or flaky and is comfortable with physical exfoliation, especially on arms, legs, elbows and knees. Normal, oily and combination skin usually get on well with it. Dry skin can use it with a creamier base and moisturiser straight after.

Choose another route, or keep it to the body, if:

  • your skin is sensitive, stings easily or flushes with friction. Body use is the gentler place to start, and some faces are better off without a scrub;
  • you have red, painful or inflamed spots. Don't scrub over them;
  • the skin is broken, sunburned, freshly waxed or razor-burned, or there's an active rash, weeping skin or an eczema flare;
  • you used strong exfoliating acids or retinoids today;
  • you have a walnut or tree-nut allergy. Choose a non-walnut exfoliant or get personal allergy advice.

Patch test 24–48 hours before first use: gently massage a little of the mixture you plan to use onto a small area of intact skin, rinse, and wait. Don't go ahead if it turns red, itchy, swollen or burning.

What should I mix walnut shell powder with?

Water works well on the body. On the face, choose something creamier, so the particles glide instead of dragging. The base decides how the scrub feels, so match it to the area.

Base Good for How to mix
Lukewarm water Body 1–2 tbsp powder, water added gradually to a loose paste
Plain unsweetened yoghurt Face or body Face: ¼ tsp in 2 tsp yoghurt. Body: 1 tbsp in 2–3 tbsp
Spierb Aloe Vera Powder paste Face or body, when you want a softer, more cushioned base Face: 1 tsp Aloe Vera Powder with 2–3 tsp warm water, rest 5 minutes, stir in ¼ tsp walnut. Body: 1 tbsp Aloe Vera Powder with about 60 ml warm water, rest 10 minutes, stir in 1 tbsp walnut
Your usual gentle cleanser Shower use One use of cleanser in your palm with ¼ tsp (face) or 1–2 tsp (body area)

On very dry elbows, knees or legs, a few drops of a light carrier oil you already use can go into a water or cream base. Don't stir powder into your whole cleanser bottle. Mix each scrub fresh and throw away what's left.

What not to mix it into

Keep mask powders out of the scrub itself. Multani Mitti sets and dries as it works, Orange Peel and Neem are fine mask powders, and adding grains to any of them stacks friction on top of a drying mask. Use them on a different day from your scrub instead.

How to use walnut shell powder as a body scrub

Cleanse, leave skin damp, scrub one area at a time, rinse, moisturise. These are the directions on the pack.

  1. Start with clean, damp skin. In the shower, step out of the spray so the scrub isn't washed away.
  2. Put 1–2 tablespoons of powder in a bowl, adjusted to the area.
  3. Add lukewarm water or your chosen base gradually until the paste is loose and glides easily. If needed, let it wet through for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Massage one area at a time with light circles for about 20–30 seconds.
  5. Keep the whole session to about 3–5 minutes of scrubbing.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  7. Pat dry and apply body lotion or your usual moisturiser.

On elbows and knees, give the rough spot one short extra pass instead of pressing harder. If it stays rough, moisturise more between scrubs.

How can I make a DIY walnut face scrub at home?

Use far less powder and far more base than on your body: ¼ teaspoon of walnut shell in 2 teaspoons of something creamy. The mix should look mostly like the base, with particles dotted through it, not like wet sand.

  1. Cleanse your face and leave it damp.
  2. Stir ¼ teaspoon of powder into 2 teaspoons of plain yoghurt, prepared Aloe Vera Powder paste or a gentle cream cleanser.
  3. Apply a thin layer with your fingertips, avoiding your eyes, eyelids, lips, broken skin and any inflamed spots.
  4. Make featherlight circles for about 20–30 seconds in total. Never go over one minute.
  5. Rinse straight away and thoroughly. Don't leave it on to dry.
  6. Pat dry and apply a plain moisturiser.

If it feels scratchy or your face stays pink afterwards, keep walnut shell powder for your body.

How often should I use a walnut scrub?

Once a week, on your body and your face. If your facial skin is dry or delicate, every 10–14 days or less is plenty.

More often won't make skin smoother any faster. It makes it tight and sensitive. Leave a longer gap if you notice dryness, tightness, stinging when you moisturise, or redness that lasts. On the day you scrub, skip other scrubs, exfoliating brushes and strong acids.

What will my skin feel like afterwards?

Smoother and softer, polished rather than squeaky. Loose flakes are less noticeable and moisturiser spreads more evenly.

Brief pinkness can happen if your skin flushes easily with touch. Heat, burning, rawness or redness that doesn't settle means too much pressure, powder or time, so rinse and let your skin recover. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I scrub before or after bathing?

During. Rinse with lukewarm water, cleanse if you need to, scrub your damp skin away from the direct spray, then rinse. Dry scrubbing before you get in adds drag and has no benefit.

Which is first, scrub or face wash?

Face wash first. Cleanse, leave your skin slightly damp, then scrub, so the scrub isn't doing a cleanser's job with extra pressure.

How many minutes should I leave a scrub on my face?

None. Walnut shell scrub isn't a mask. Massage gently for about 20–30 seconds, never more than a minute, then rinse straight away.

Is it better to exfoliate in the morning or at night?

Either works. Evening can be easier because you don't need to layer other products straight after. If you scrub in the daytime, use your normal sun protection.

What body parts should I exfoliate?

Intact arms, legs, elbows and knees. Thinner areas like the neck and chest need less pressure and may not need a scrub at all. Avoid the eye area, genitals, cuts, sunburn and inflamed skin.

When should you not exfoliate?

Not on broken, sunburned, freshly waxed, razor-burned or already stinging skin, over inflamed spots, or on a day you've used strong acids or retinoids. Wait until your skin feels comfortable again.

Can I use walnut shell powder on my hair?

No. Spierb Walnut Shell Powder is for skin only. The particles get trapped in hair, and scrubbing can irritate the scalp.
