Henna for Grey Hair: Copper, Brown or Black, and How to Get Each
Henna colours grey hair copper on its own. How to choose between copper, a one-step brown and a two-step black with indigo, the timings for each, and how to keep the result as roots grow.
The short answer: henna colours grey hair very visibly, and on its own it colours it copper, not brown. For copper or red greys, henna alone is all you need. For brown, mix fresh indigo into rested henna and apply it once. For black or very dark brown, colour with henna first and follow it with a high-indigo second step in the same session. Strand test first: grey shows colour more clearly than any other hair.
Can henna cover grey hair?
Yes, when the paste is prepared properly and the grey is fully saturated. Grey and white strands hold little natural pigment, so they take henna's warm colour more strongly than the hair around them. With henna alone that means copper, orange-copper or copper-red.
If most of your hair is grey, expect an overall copper result. Scattered greys in darker hair read as warm highlights instead. Neither is a failure: it's what a translucent plant dye does to a low-pigment strand.
Can henna turn grey hair black?
Not on its own. Henna alone never gives brown or black on grey. Black comes from a second step with indigo over a henna base, in the same colouring session.
Is henna good for grey hair?
It suits you if you want warm, long-lasting botanical colour and you're happy for the shade to depend on your own hair. It's one leaf powder, with no PPD, ammonia or peroxide, and it builds the warm base that indigo needs for brown and black.
It suits you less if you want an exact shade every time, or may want to go lighter later: henna grows out rather than washing out, and lifting it afterwards is unpredictable.
How can I cover my grey hair without chemical dye?
Pick the route by the colour you want. All three use Spierb Henna Powder, and two of them add Spierb Indigo Powder. The ratios are starting points, not fixed shades, so strand test with the exact formula you plan to use.
| You want | Route | Typical result on grey or white hair |
| Copper, ginger or red | Henna alone | Bright orange-copper at first, settling to richer copper or copper-red |
| Light brown | One step, 70:30 henna to indigo | Warm light brown, often reading copper-brown |
| Medium brown | One step, 50:50 | Medium brown |
| Dark brown | One step, 30:70 | Dark brown, deeper and cooler |
| Black or very dark | Two steps: henna, then 80:20 indigo to henna | Black to very dark brown-black |
More henna keeps the result warmer; more indigo takes it darker and cooler. Very resistant grey often does better on the two-step route when the target is genuinely black.
Can I use indigo on its own for grey hair?
It isn't the route we use. On pale grey or white hair, indigo without a henna foundation can come out blue, blue-green, greenish or patchy. Henna changes what the strand looks like underneath, and the indigo then reads as brown or black over it.
How do I use henna and indigo on grey hair?
Rest the henna, mix the indigo fresh, and saturate the roots properly. Mix henna with comfortably warm water or warm filtered tea in a non-metallic bowl to a thick-yoghurt paste, then cover it and rest it 3–4 hours, ideally 8. Work on clean, product-free hair, dry or slightly damp, with petroleum jelly along the hairline, ears and neck to stop skin staining — keep it off the hair itself.
- Copper: apply the rested henna in 4–6 sections, cover with a shower cap or damp towel and leave at least 2 hours; longer gives a deeper result while the paste stays moist. Rinse thoroughly. Full steps: the beginner henna method.
- Brown, one step: when you're ready to apply, mix indigo fresh with warm water and a pinch of salt, combine it with the rested henna at your ratio and apply straight away. Leave 1–2 hours, then rinse. Full steps: mixing henna and indigo for brown.
- Black, two steps: apply henna for 2 hours or longer, rinse, and let the hair dry to damp — not soaking wet. Then mix fresh salted indigo, combine it with saved rested henna at 80:20 indigo to henna, apply, leave 1–2 hours and rinse. Full steps: the two-step method for black.
Indigo is always mixed fresh. Rest the henna, never the indigo: mix it with a pinch of salt only when you're ready to apply, and use it straight away. After any colour containing indigo, leave the hair 24 hours before shampooing or oiling, including between the two black steps.
How do I avoid bright orange greys?
Choose the brown or black route from the start. Waiting lets fresh colour settle, but settling alone won't take pale grey roots to brown: that needs indigo in the formula.
Saturation matters as much as the ratio: grey roots need paste pressed right around them, not a thin skim. If your greys came out brighter than you hoped, why is my henna orange covers what to do next.
How long does it last, and how do I keep it up?
Plant colour doesn't wash out; it grows out. You'll notice new grey at the roots rather than colour fading off the lengths, though indigo shades can lose a little depth earlier than henna alone.
Once the lengths are where you want them, colour the regrowth and leave the rest, using the same route and ratio each time. Automatically re-coating the whole head makes the lengths darker and warmer with every application.
Frequently Asked Questions
What colour henna is best for grey hair?
Pure henna is one plant dye in the copper-red family, so there are no natural henna "shades" to pick between. Choose the system instead: henna alone for copper, one-step henna and indigo for brown, two-step for black.
What does henna do to grey hair?
It stains the strand with warm colour. Grey and white hair shows that most clearly, usually as bright orange-copper at first, settling to a richer copper or copper-red over 24–48 hours.
How long should I leave henna on grey hair?
At least 2 hours for henna alone, and longer gives a deeper result as long as the paste stays moist under a shower cap or damp towel. A one-step brown mix stays on 1–2 hours, and so does the indigo step of the two-step black.
What should I mix with henna for grey hair?
Comfortably warm water or warm filtered tea makes the paste. Indigo is the only addition that changes the colour. Amla can mute bright copper at 5–20% of the dry blend, and Aloe Vera Powder conditions, so hair feels softer and less dry after rinsing. What to mix with henna has the rest.
What is the best henna powder for covering grey hair?
Look for a single ingredient, Lawsonia inermis leaf powder, finely milled so it saturates roots smoothly, with honest colour guidance. Spierb Henna Powder is grown in Pali, Rajasthan, a region known for high-lawsone henna, and triple sifted.
Is henna better for grey hair than hair colour?
It depends what you value. Henna gives long-lasting warm colour from one leaf powder and blends greys beautifully, but it can't lighten hair and can't promise an exact shade. A chemical dye can do both, at the cost of a formulated product on your scalp.
Can henna and indigo be used together on grey hair?
Yes, and that's how brown and black are made. Mixed in one paste they give brown; used one after the other, henna first, they give black to very dark brown. Apply indigo immediately after mixing it.
How long do I leave henna and indigo on grey hair?
One-step brown: 1 hour minimum, 2 hours maximum. Two-step black: henna for 2 hours or longer, then the 80:20 indigo mix for 1–2 hours. Don't leave indigo on overnight.
